Indias global ranking for important social indicators

We have compared India's performance with some selected countries (within our neighbourhood, and across the globe) for important social indicators. The indicators considered here are, the density of population, the human development index, the literacy rate (men, women and overall), the unemployment rate and the percentage of the total population which is English speaking.

The Human development index (HDI) is now commonly used to rank the overall progress of a country or society. HDI is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and per capita income indicators, which are used to rank countries into four tiers of human development. A country scores higher HDI when the lifespan is higher, the education level is higher, the GDP per capita is higher, the fertility rate is lower, and the inflation rate is lower.

The Global literacy rates is the percentage of the population above the age of 15 who can read and write.

The unemployment rate is an indication of unemployment in a country. It is calculated as a percentage by dividing the number of unemployed individuals by all individuals currently in the labor force.

The Gini index is a number between 0 and 1, where 0 corresponds with perfect equality (where everyone has the same income) and 1 corresponds with perfect inequality (where one person has all the income and everyone else has zero income)
