It is said that Sri Adi Sankara installed the idol of Mookambika made of an alloy of metals with three eyes and four arms. In the upper hands there is a Sri Chakra and a Conch where as the lower hand is blessing her devotees. Devi is decorated with ornaments of gold and diamond. The idol of devi is installed behind the Lingam. The Lingam is the main deity in the temple, and is known as Jyothirlingam. The golden line can be seen when the light from the sun is reflected and points at the lingam. Poojas are offered to the devi five times in a day, deepaaradhana and seeveli are some of the poojas performed to devi.

History of the temple

Long ago there lived a demon called Kamsasuran, who had received a boon from Lord Shiva. He was giving trouble to the gods and goddess in the heaven. Unable to bear this the gods and goddess took shelter in the Kodachadri hills. Kamsasuran had a curse that he would die in the hands of a goddess. So he did a penance to please lord Shiva. The goddess of speech along with Veerabadra, Ganapathi and Lord Shiva, made Kamsasuram dumb. Thus Kamsasuran could not ask any wishes before Lord Shiva and came to be known as Mukasuran. Soon the devi, on the request of sage Kola killed him with her Sri Chakra in a place which is popularly known as Maranakatte. On the request of god and goddess devi resided here in the kodachadri hills and popularly came to be known as Mookambika

There are smaller shrines around the sanctum like Lord Ganesh with ten hands, Subramanya, Anjaneya, Veerabhadra and Adi Sankara. The forest of Maranakatte has medicinal properties as the forest is full of medicinal herbs and plants. Apart from this, there are the Shukla Theertha, Govinda Theertha waterfalls nearby.
