ISKCON Temple
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was established in the year 1966 by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (Srila Prabhupada). Today ISKCON has developed to such an extent that it has organizations world wide. It was formed to propagate the message of Bhagwad Gita. Most ISKCON members practice Krishna consciousness. In India there are about 40 ISKCON temples. ISKCON temples are dedicated to Lord Krishna. Painting of Radha Krishna, Sita, Ram, Laxman, and Hanuman are a common feature in the ISKCON temples. On Sundays there are special programs like pravachan, kirtan.
The ISKCON temple in Bangalore is spread around an area of 7 acres. The architecture of this temple is a combination of traditional Karnataka and modern styles to give the aesthetic style as well as the best of latest scientific technology. Gold plated kalasham which is 36 feet high and 18 feet base, intricately designed is one to watch. The main Deities are made of panchaloha and are gold plated. Apart from this Kalyana mantapa and pravachana halls are also good to watch. The three idols of Lord Krishna in the main shrine are made of brass.
The 13-day anniversary celebration of the Iskcon temple Brahmotsava festival is celebrated every year. Every day a procession of the deities is taken in the evening during these festival days.
Akshaya Patra Foundation
This is a program started in 2000 by the ISKCON foundation to attract more children to the schools. The main aim of this foundation is to remove hunger which remains an obstacle for the underprivileged children to continue their education. Akshaya patra means a bowl with inexhaustible resources. This foundation provides nutrition-rich food everyday to school children. Some of the places where it provides food to the school children are Bangalore, Mysore, Hubli, Dharwad, Mangalore, Bellary-Ananthpur and some places in UP, Rajastan and Orissa. It has also introduced a series of measures to improve the quality of education in these schools through Vidya Akshaya Patra.
