FAQ for Indian professionals applying for a SSN in USA

Q How can I apply for my Social Security Number (SSN)? What documentation will I require?
A If you have arrived in the US with a job, your employer will help you with this process. In any case, getting a Social Security Number (SSN) is a simple procedure. Go to the nearest Social Security Office with your passport and complete the application form. You should receive the Social Security Number (It is a card the size of a business card) within a week or two in the mail.

The SSN is a valuable document, keep it in a safe place in your house. You do not have to carry it on your person. Do not needlessly give out your SSN. Please check with a colleague before doing so. The SSN is not issued to any dependent aliens, say wife or children. However, in certain states, you can get an SSN for dependents if this required for getting other documents like a drivers license.
