Make at least 3 copies of all your important documents and get these duly notarized as “True Copies”. Leave one complete set behind in India should you lose these papers, you can apply for duplicates based on these copies. Keep a second set in the baggage you check-in and keep the third copy in your hand baggage but not with your originals. It is advisable to keep the originals on your person at all times.
We don’t want to be alarmist, however the authorities at different airports can be unpredictable depending on your situation.
- If your passport is missing in a transit airport (Singapore, Frankfurt, London, etc.) You might not be allowed to board the aircraft and will be deported to the nearest consulate.
- If you loose your visa papers, depending on where it is detected, you might be sent back to India or asked to wait till your employer faxes the relevant docs to the concerned airport.
- If you lose your papers in the USA, apply to the nearest Indian Consulate for attestation of photocopies, and apply for of a new passport.
