South Indian Temples

Southern India is a home for many temples, culture and tradition etc. Spiritual knowledge is the unique contribution to the modern world. From the earlier age to the modern age the every nature's object is worshipped in India.

Many South Indian temples are located in Tamil Nadu. Chennai is city of temples with some great architecture and native style according to their culture and tradition; some temples are in island, peak hills and on mountains.

Architecture of South Indian Temples

Most of the South Indian temples come up with the Gopurams and Vimana. Vimana is rested on the square base with the tall tower and with many small storeys. Gopuram are split across the horizontal rods. The contribution towards the South Indian temples is done mostly by Pallavas, the Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagar rulers, and Nayak's. South Indian temples are built according to the Dravida style.

Here are the four famous south Indian temples.

  • Meenakshi Temple: In Madurai, Tamil Nadu, town of many temples. This temple should be visited at least once in the life time, most famous south Indian temple built according to the Tamil Nadu culture. It has been built 4,000 years ago and has four entrances namely north tower, south Tower, east Tower and west Tower.

  • Rameshwaram: Rameshwaram is an island in Tamil Nadu. Lord Rama built this bridge across the sea to save Sita from Ravana according to the yesteryears history.

  • Tirupati: Tirupati is in Andhra Pradesh; Lord Venkateshwar is the deity where this is located at the tip of the Eastern Mountains.

  • Thanjavur: This is the according to the Tamil culture. Including this temple there were 80 other temples built by Chola King Raja Raja I. Brihadeswara Temple is one of the famous temple during their period.
