My America - R.K.Narayan

From : Srividya Deshpande

1999

This is in response to the article, 'My America by RK Narayan'. This was truly a very honest and open reflection. I have been in the U.S.A. for about 6 months now, and I realised some of my frustration and confusion in the article.

The most common comment that I hear from the Indian immigrants to the USA is, 'If only we could have this pay and lifestyle in India!!!'. Every Indian who has moved here for greener pastures have done so mostly because they feel their education and expertise can be better realised in here in USA, the 'Land of Oppurtunities'. However, we do miss our families and friends, our loved ones, our neighbourhood, our home.

'Home is where the Heart is', and somehow our heart cannot be convinced to accepting this foreign country with the logics of the mind.

It's so true that finally we are trapped in a transitional phase where we neither find ourselves totally Indian nor totally Americanised.

Regards,
Srividya Deshpande
