Dr V. Mohan Reddy, a NRI pediatric cardiac surgeon has saved the life of an infant with his pioneering surgery. According to local media reports, he operated on the grape-sized heart of a baby born prematurely.
Jerrick De Leon, the three-week-old baby is the son of a pediatrician. He was just 700 grams when he was born 13 weeks premature on January 30. The baby was born with his aorta and pulmonary arteries connected to the wrong ventricles in his heart.
Dr Mohan Reddy switched the arteries during a "miraculous" operation on February 6 - working on a heart that was about the size of a grape and arteries little larger than the tip of a ballpoint pen.
Because the baby was so small, Southern California doctors had initially thought his heart condition was inoperable. However the prognosis now is for a full and normal life expectancy.
