A NRI doctor in the United Kingdom whose promotion as a consultant in the National Health Service (NHS) was thwarted because of his race has been awarded damages of 635,000 pounds. This is the largest discrimination award made against the NHS.
Vijay Jadhav, 45 who came to Britain in 1993 was told he could not progress to consultant status because his visa would run out before the training could be completed. This despite officials knowing that the immigration rules were to be changed.
British media reports speculate that the case may have ramifications for 1,250 other overseas doctors who are said to have been subjected to the same restrictions.
