Indian American wins 2008 National Geographic Bee

Akshay Rajagopal, an 11-year-old sixth-grader from Lincoln, Nebraska, won the 2008 National Geographic Bee held in Washington, DC. By winning this prestigious competition, he gets a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

The final question to which Akshay gave the correct answer was: The urban area of Cochabamba has been in the news in recent years due to protests over the privatisation of the municipal water supply and regional autonomy issues. Cochabamba is the third largest conurbation in what country? Answer: Bolivia.

Other questions that Akshay correctly answered included the westernmost Asian national capital (Ankara in Turkey), the country where Makossa is a popular type of music (Cameroon), and the location of Tillya Tepe (it's in Afghanistan).

Akshay attends the Lux Middle School in Lincoln. He got all his answers correct in both the preliminary rounds and in the final round. In the finals the top 10 contestants who were all boys competed against each other. The competition which is in its 20th year was moderated by the 'Jeopardy!' host Alex Trebek.
