Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has won Channel 4's reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother. Shilpa won with sixty three percent of the public vote.
The reality show hit the headlines across the globe after allegations of racist behaviour by participants against Shilpa. The racist comments caused outrage in India and Britain, with the issue figuring in the House of Commons and with Indian ministers demanding corrective action. At the height of the row protesters in India burnt effigies of participants who were rude to Shilpa.
Shilpa, the thirty one year old actress made her debut in Bollywood with the 1993 super hit Baazigar which also starred reigning superstar Shah Rukh Khan. Even though Shilpa not have the kind of audience pull a top actress such as Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukherjee or Preity Zinta possesses, she certainly adds celebrity value to any casting. When it was revealed she would be taking part in Celebrity Big Brother, there was tremendous curiosity in India. Not just because of the format of the programme and its reputation, but also for the huge amount of money she was paid for her appearance. In India, it is rumoured the actress will pocket $680,456 (£345,145).
