An NRI from Punjab, Harjinder Singh Sidhu has bought Air Slovakia, a private Central European airline. Sidhu wants to transform the airline into a Punjabi experience, reports CNBC.
It is a homecoming for a man who has gone from rags to riches after migrating to England in the early 70s. Sidhu began his journey doing odd jobs before setting his eyes on a Russian petrol station in the UK. Within a few years, his enterprise saw him owning 30 petrol stations across Britain. After dabbling in property in Britain, Canada and India, Harjinder got into the aviation sector by floating a chartered flight from London to Amritsar. Since then, there's been no looking back. Last week Sidhu bought Air Slovakia, and though it has just three planes - the new owner has only one aim - to connect Punjab to Europe in typical Punjabi style.
Air Slovakia is the only one in business that connects European cities to Amritsar. Flights from London, Barcelona, Athens, Amsterdam and Glasgow to Amritsar will start soon, says Harjinder. By 2007, the company plans to increase its fleet to nine planes from the three it has now.
