As many as 84,681 Indians received Green Cards last year, making them the second largest immigrants to the United States, according to data released by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Mexico topped the list with 1,61,445 immigrants to the US who got Green Cards last year. China followed India in the third place with 69,967 immigrants.
Migration through employment has led to drastic increase in the number of Indians getting a Green Card which entitles them permanent residency in the US. Most of them are software professionals who came to the US on a worker visa like H1-B. After five years of permanent residency they can choose to become US citizens. A large number of software professionals who migrated to the US in the 1990s in search of jobs made India also claim the largest number of Green Cards last year under the employment category.
The largest number of applications pending approval for Green Card was also for Indians.
