India is increasingly becoming a major health care destination for patients from around the world. The country has been attracting large number of patients from neighbouring Bangladesh, Pakistan, Africa and the Middle Eastern countries. More recently patients are travelling even from advanced countries in Europe and North America.
The primary factor driving this phenomenon is the low cost of quality health care in India. Open-heart surgery in the UK can cost more than $20,000 while it can double that figure in the United States. In India, leading hospitals can perform that surgery for less than $5,000.
The recent successful open heart surgery of a child from Pakistan in Bangalore captured the media headlines in the sub continent. The BBC web-site is currently featuring the case of a patient travelling to India to have knee surgery.
The Indian government estimates the Indian health care industry to be valued at $17bn, some 4% of India's GDP and growing at over 10% every year. It is expected to reach 2,700bn rupees ($60bn) by 2012.
