US President George W Bush has announced that he intends to nominate Karan K. Bhatia of Maryland, an NRI, to be an Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Aviation and International Affairs.
Bhatia currently serves as Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security. This promotion would make him the highest-ranked Indian American in the current administration following the resignation earlier this year of Bobby Jindal as Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mr. Jindal resigned as Assistant Secretary to run for Governorship of Lousiana.
Karan K. Bhatia is a graduate of Princeton University (A.B.), the London School of Economics (M.Sc.), and Columbia University's School of Law (J.D.). Bhatia is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where he co-teaches a course on international civil litigation.
