An Indian graduate student was badly beaten and stabbed in Massachusetts on Sunday night the 22nd of June. The student, Saurabh Bhalerao, 24, who studies at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, was listed in fair condition after undergoing emergency surgery.
According to the police report, Saurabh was making a Pizza delivery late on Sunday night. After handing the pizza to a man who answered the door, Saurabh was being paid when two men behind Saurabh shoved him into the apartment and pushed him to the ground. After which at least three attackers tied him and stuffed clothes in his mouth to prevent him from calling for help. The attackers beat and kicked Saurabh so badly that they broke the bones in his face.
Sometime later, the men forced Saurabh into the trunk of his own car and drove toward. During the ride, the wounded Saurabh managed to loosen the ropes binding his body. He grabbed a hammer and screwdriver that were laying near him and opened the trunk when the car stopped. The kidnappers confronted Saurabh who swung the hammer and hit the shoulder of one attacker. In return, the suspects stabbed him three times before running away.
As of Tuesday evening, the police had 2 suspects, Ryan Marsh and Christopher Pereira in custody. Ryan Marsh, 17, of New Bedford, was being held Tuesday on $100,000 cash bail. Christopher Pereira, 20, of New Bedford, has also been charged in the attack. Police believe two other men may have been involved.
Saurabh Bhalerao is originally from Indore and was the president of the Indian student association at UMASS Dartmouth during 2001/2002.
