A large number of Indian illegal immigrants have availed of the amnesty
granted by the UAE government for exiting the country without any penalties.
According to a report in the Dubai based Khaleej Times, the amnesty period
that was initially granted for 4 months had been extended by an additional
month and is due to expire soon.
Khaleej Times in its report was quoting the Indian Consul-General, Dr George
Joseph, who estimates that a total of over 25,000 Indians have made use of
this amnesty. About 1,800 illegal immigrants benefited from the amnesty
during the extended period. As expected the numbers are decreasing as the
final deadline arrives.
