The American outfitting company, American Eagle which introduced footwear with images of Lord Ganesha, has decided to withdraw the offending slippers from the market. The company also tendered a formal apology to Indiacause, the organization which took up this issue with American Eagle.
This decision follows an immediate outcry by the enraged Indian community in the United States. The company was said to have been bombarded with letters and mails from indignant Indians. Organizations like the American Hindus Against Defamation (AHAD) and "Indiacause" initiated an formal protest.
In a letter dated 29 April to Indiacause, the American Eagle company said 'Please accept this letter as our formal apology for our use of the image resembling the Lord Ganesh on this product'. The letter, dated 29 April, signed by Neil Bulman, Jr. (Vice President and General Counsel, AE) has also assured 'we will remove these flip-flop shoes from our stores'.
