The Home Secretary of Britain David Blunkett, has created a controversy after several groups took strong exception to his suggestion that immigrants abandon their mother tongue at home and speak in English to their children.
Blunkett in an essay for a book called Reclaiming Britishness writes "The parents should speak English to their children to prevent schizophrenic rifts between generations,". Blunkett adds that children should be encouraged to talk with their mothers "in English as well as in their historic mother tongue".
This is created an uproar particularly in the Asian community to whom the comments were directed.
The former Europe minister, Keith Vaz, and one of the most prominent Asian MP's, called it one of the "silliest" remarks ever made by a home secretary.
He accused Mr Blunkett of using the Asian community as a "cheap target".
