It has been a whole year since the terrible acts of September 11, 2001. A year which has changed not only America but the entire world in profound ways. The impact of these events was particularly hard on the Indian American community. According the New York Times, there were 34 Indians, or people of Indian origin among the victims of the World Trade Center. Among the non-Americans, this figure makes the Indians the second highest number of victims of a particular nationality after the British, who numbered 53.
Adding to the fear of the terrorist acts themselves, the Indian community also had to face suspicions of being linked with the perpetrators of the crime. The Brown complexion and the turbans, made Indians suspicious to some eyes. There were numerous incidents of hate crimes against the community.
NRIOL expresses sympathy and prays for all victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
