Non Resident Indian in the Gulf region have called for either a separate ID card or a stamp on their passports identifying them as non-resident Indians.. According to the Gulf News, a memorandum to Yashwant Sinha, Indian External Affairs Minister, was submitted recently to highlight the issue of frauds committed against their bank deposits in India. The memorandum was submitted by a prominent social worker based in Dubai.
According to the memorandum, 70 per cent of Gulf NRIs are semi-skilled and unskilled workers and they often fall prey to low level bureaucrats. They are being harassed at every stage to prove their NRI status. They have to substantiate their identity as a non-resident at immigration, customs, income tax office, school admission of their children, buying and selling real estate, buying and selling stocks and while going through bank formalities.
One practical suggestion would be a stamp in the passport stating that the holder of the document is an NRI. The Indian mission abroad could charge a nominal fee for that stamp, the memo said.
