Intel Corporation, the Santa Clara, California based
company which is the world's largest chipmaker, stated
on Friday it will invest about $100 million over the next three
years to expand its chip design and software research
in India.
The investment will triple the number of employees
currently from 900 to about 3000 at its research and
development center in Bangalore according to Intel's
chief executive Craig H. Barrett.
At a press conference Barrett said Intel will focus
its investment on research into chip designs and the
development of other software. "There is no limitation
to India's ability, except in people's minds," he
added.
Barrett also felt that India was in a good position to
attract even more investment from U.S. companies that
are eager to reduce their costs by moving part of
their operations overseas.
However, he said, India needed to improve its
facilities to be able to support large-scale hardware
manufacturing and that Intel was looking at both China
and Russia for this.
