The state of California in an unprecedented gesture yesterday honoured members of the Indian community. According to the PTI, the list of eminent individuals honoured included Hindi film actor Anupam Kher and Venture Capitalist Kanwal Rekhi.
This is the first time in the history of California that members of the Indian community have been honoured in the Assembly. The Indian tri-colour flew in the California Assembly as state senators and Assembly members passed a resolution to celebrate the day along with the Indian community
The resolution, passed in both houses, stated that California had been greatly influenced by achievements of Indian Americans in diverse areas such as agriculture, high technology industry, medicine and social leadership. Of the 400,000 H1-B visa holders, half are from India, and about 300,000 Indian Americans work in technology firms in California's Silicon Valley, who account for more than 15 per cent of high-tech startups in that region, it said.
