Former Intel employee Vinod Dham has launched a venture capital firm to fund the development and design of newcomputer chips.
Dham, formerly in charge of developing Pentium chips,is teaming up with fellow Indian software professional Tushar Dave to form New Path Ventures, which the pair hopes will help turn India into a powerhouse for computer hardware, reported the Agence France Presse.
"The new company will proactively create three to five hybrid Indo-US companies over two years," Dham said. "A sum of $5 to $10 million will be invested in each of these companies in early stages. In Bangalore, talks are on to set up a core chip-design center and within a year it will employ 100 software engineers," he said.
New Path will incubate firms and also help identify global customers. Dham said the hybrid companies would have the best of both worlds: a front office in the world's leading economy, America, and cheap manufacturing in India.
"Companies in the United States suffer from huge cost of labor and Indian companies suffer from a lack of market access. The focus is to make India a leader in hardware within 10 years," he said.
New Path will also focus on developing chips in the areas of mobile communications and messaging, data centers, and delivery of multimedia content to homes.
