Bend it like Beckham - the latest movie by Indian-British director Gurinder Chada is currently topping the British film charts. It is the first British film by non Caucasian Briton to be number one.
The movie “Bend it like Beckham” is a romantic comedy about a young adventurous woman of Indian origin growing up in England. It has touched an emotional chord with the British audiences and probably reflects the inroads that the Indian community has made in mainstream British society."
Jess, the young Indian-British woman played by Parminder Nagra breaks many taboos in her traditional family by clandestinely playing and excelling in soccer. She becomes the star of her team, and is in love with her white coach. Gurinder Chada’s earlier movie “Bhaji on the beach” about the Indian British community was also very successful.
While “Bend it like Beckham” is topping the film charts, there are reports of a similar success for Andrew Lloyd Weber’s play “Bombay Dreams”. This play is set in Mumbai with the music being composed by Indian composer A.R. Rahman.
