The Australian Immigration Minister Philip Ruddock announced recently that the Australian Federal government has decided to suspend priority visa processing for IT workers. This policy change that will adversely impact Indian computer professionals and Indian students in Australia.
Priority visa processing for IT workers was introduced 18 months ago in response to the IT boom. There was then a lot of pressure from the IT industry which was concerned about the scarcity of computer professionals in Australia. However with the slowdown in the economy, there has been a reversal in the IT market. A study that was critical of the government's immigration policies for IT professionals was released last week and said there were 8000 unemployed Australian IT professionals.
Despite the change in priority visa policy, the government had not changed the temporary visa programme for IT professionals. Under it, employers do not have to show a proof of not finding suitable Australians before employing a temporary overseas computer professional.
