Mata Amritanandamayi attracts thousands in America

Mata Amritanandamayi the Mystic from Kerala also fondly known as Ammachi or simply Amma has been attracting thousands of people in the United States. She is currently on a 10 city tour through the country. She was recently in Columbia University, New York and will be going to Boston and Washington D.C. before returning to India.

While she is well known in India for a long time, the Western world has also begun to recognize Amma. In 1993, she was elected as one of the presidents of the Centenary Parliament of World Religions in Chicago. She has also been a featured speaker at the United Nations at the invitation of Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Amma is renowned for her ‘dharsan’ and hugs which her disciples believe can ease physical pain and suffering. She is known to hugs thousands of devotees throughout the day. Along with the hugs, Amma has also created multiple humanitarian and educational institutions. Her largest endeavour is the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, an 800-bed hospital and research center that gives state-of-the-art medical treatment to the poor.
