The Delhi High Court has awarded the family of Indian American doctor Suresh K Mahajan the highest-ever
Insurance compensation awarded in India. The awarded amount is Rs 16-crore. According to the Times of
India, Dr Suresh Mahajan who was killed in a road accident in Rajasthan seven years ago and was insured
by an Indian vehicle insurance company.
However the Supreme Court has opined that the Rs 16-crore awarded by the Delhi High Court was
‘‘exorbitant’’ and has asked the Motor Accidents Claim Tribunal (MACT) to recalculate the amount. The
insurance company felt that after recalculation, it might have to pay between Rs 6 crore and Rs 8 crore.
Dr Mahajan had migrated to the US and established his own nursing home at Michigan. He is survived by his
wife Patricia Jean Mahajan, three children, who live in the US, and aged parents living in India.
