US increases job quotas for foreign medicos
|
|
The US House of Representatives on Tuesday June 25, 2002 passed a law increasing the
number of foreign doctors allowed to stay in the US if they agreed to work
in communities needing their service.
Under terms of the foreign medical students visa, foreign medical graduates
must return to their native country for two years after their training in
the US. However this requirement is often waived by the US government in
return for three years of work in hospitals or clinics where doctors are in
short supply. Each state can now request 30 waivers annually, as opposed to
the current figure of 20 waivers.
