Police dug up the body of Amin Shaikh in Gandhinagar, Mumbai, a year and a half after he was murdered, allegedly by his wife and her lover.
28-year-old Shahida Shaikh never really loved her husband who worked in Saudi Arabia as an airconditioner technician. He visited her once a year and gave her two children. Meanwhile, she got close to her neighbour Haroon, and fell in love with him.
When Amin came home for Eid al Adha in March 2000, he had wanted to see the room which his wife had said she bought for Rs. 1 lakh in Dindoshi. Shahida had apparently sold the room and given the proceeds to Haroon to help him pay his debts. When Amin insisted on seeing the room, the plot was hatched.
Shahida allegedly poisoned Amin and Haroon attacked him. They then dug a pit in the mori (bathroom space that is cemented in the kachcha house) in the room, placed Amin's body in it and plastered it over so perfectly that even the smell of the rotting body never reached the neighbours.
It would have remained so had Haroon not been arrested in a robbery case. Police got suspicious and checked his background when he admitted to the murder.
