Racial tensions have worsened in the European Union (EU) after the September 11 attacks, according to a report in NDTV. Officials of the EU,
which includes countries such as the UK, Germany and France, have said that this racism needs to be addressed to prevent the situation from spiraling.
Beate Winkler, director of the EU's Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC), was quoted as saying, "There were much stronger verbal attacks, bomb
threats and physical violence throughout the 15 EU countries [after September 11]." She added that there were "feelings of mutual suspicion", and that Muslims and ethnic minorities
felt the onus was on them to prove they were not terrorists.
Further, EUMC chairman Bob Purkiss said racism was a daily occurrence for many minorities, mainly in the job market. He was quoted as saying that "even where migrants
received the same pay for the same job, their income was about 5 per cent less, as they were denied bonuses and opportunities to do overtime."
