NRI student enrollment in US varsities climbs

INDIA has just surpassed Japan as the second largest source of foreign students in the US and is now second only to China.

Institute of International Education in US reports that in 2001, about 54,664 Indian students and 59,939 Chinese students enrolled in US universities.

The IIE report states that the Indian students account for the largest increase of over 29 per cent in the number of foreign students while there was 10% increase in the Chinese student group.

This year’s international student enrolment in the US itself has been a record of sorts. The number stands at an impressive 547,867. The 6.4 per cent increase in the number of foreign students is the largest in the past 20 years.
