New York Times reports that Nixon B. Saldhana who is originally from Bombay
and now living in Queens, NY has been indicted by a federal grand jury in
Manhattan for staging an anthrax hoax.
Mr. Saldhana wanted to return to India but he could not afford the plane
fare, so he tried to get himself deported by raising false alarms of
anthrax. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of
$250,000 or more.
Apparently Mr. Saldhana had downloaded copies of anthrax-tainted letters
from a Web site, prepared similar letters, then sealed them in envelopes
along with talcum powder. He then carried the letters to a National
Guardsman in Manhattan claiming he had found them on a telephone booth.
Investigators said his wish to be deported might be fulfilled - after a stay
in a federal prison.
