Carnigie Mellon Univ. shuns 'Sankhya Vahini'

India Abroad reports that Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the US has withdrawn from the ambitious Sankhya Vahini project.

Sankhya Vahini refers to a very high bandwidth All India national data network for educational, healthcare and other knowledge oriented multimedia applications that support the technological and economic growth. Sankhya Vahini network aims to be India's network backbone that would initially connect ten metropolitan centers and over 100 institutions of higher learning and research centers.

Dr. Arunachalam and Dr. Raj Reddy both distinguished professors at Carnegie Mellon University visualized 'Sankhya Vahini'. Their original intention was to address the absence of a national backbone of large bandwidth to promote the growth of IT in India.

The Indian government for more than two years has not sanctioned the project. The government quotes that it is not possible to start a large project without a global tender and hopes to complete the process soon.

IUNet Inc. the commercial arm of Carnegie Mellon University states that it is disappointed with the speed of progress in the project and consequently has withdrawn its intention to be involved in the project.
