The Visa Office of the U.S. Department of State advises that it has not
changed visa procedures, and that virtually all posts are open for full
consular services.
Several Indian newspapers have reported that a six-month ban is going to be
imposed on the issuance of student visas to the United States in response to
the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.
Currently, student visas continue to be processed as normal and there are no
changes in the processing of student visas or any other non-immigrant or
immigrant visas.
The United States Consulate General in Chennai and other Indian cities are
continuing to process all visa applications as normal.
However Mexico will not issue visas to enter Mexico for Indian citizens
(including Green Card, H-1B holders) without a prior check conducted by the
Mexican INS office in Mexico City. This policy can slow processing by 30
days or more.
Tourists are advised to check with Mexican consulate before making a
nonimmigrant third country national appointment at a US post in Mexico. This
policy is reported to be temporary at this juncture.
