Laisenia Qarase was sworn in as Fiji's new Prime minister on Monday.
Qarase's nationalist party won 31 of Fiji's 71 parliamentary seats while the
Labour Party led by Indo-Fijian and former Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry
won 27 seats.
Qarase has said that he will abide by the constitutional provision and offer
a place in his government to Chaudhry's party. The Fijian constitution
mandates that any party with more than 8 seats must be offered a place in
the government. However Qarase did make it evident that he did not want
Chaudhry to accept this offer.
Mahendra Chaudhry has claimed widespread vote rigging and plans court action
to challenge the election result. Election monitors however have said the
poll was credible.
