The Indian Government is to consider dividing the country into two different time zones.
A member of a four-strong government committee set up to examine the feasibility of the move, according to a BBC News report. The report adds that the main consideration was to make the best use of daylight in eastern India.
The sun rises and sets more than an hour earlier there than in the west so that easterners stay up an hour later than they might, keeping lights on and using more electricity, the report added.
It is not the first time the idea has been mooted; more than a decade ago, a team of researchers at a leading Indian energy institute proposed a system of time zones to save power, according to the report.
