The following information is relevant for Indians who have worked in the
United States, and have paid social security taxes.
According to the US 2000 census, the Indian community in the United States
is one of the fastest growing immigrant communities in the nation. A
significant factor for this fast growth has been the large number of skilled
professionals from India. While all working Indians in the US have all paid
Social security taxes, most of them will not reap any benefits from the
social security system if they return to India.
It was brought to our notice that the Social Security Administration website
is looking for visitor input regarding this before 31st July 2001. Currently
workers from 18 select countries who worked in both the US and these
countries are eligible for benefits due to existing agreements. India is not
in this list of 18 countries. We need to urgently organise ourselves and
make our concerns known. Please go to the following link to read more about this

Subject: Social Security to include Indian professionals in the United States
Dear Sir/Madam,
During the past decade many skilled professionals have came to the US from
India. On the basis of current trends, many more are likely to come in near
future. However not all of them will be able to settle in the US. During
their professional careers in the United States they will contribute their
fair share to the Social Security pool. However if they relocate to India,
they are currently not eligible to get any Social Security benefits.
We urge the US govt to have an agreement with India regarding Social
Security Benefits which is just to Indian professionals here. These
professionals despite their contributions to Social Security currently
cannot expect any benefits from it.
As you are aware, these benefits are currently available for professionals
from certain other countries. I would like to see India in this list.
Thank you.
Warm Regards,
(Signed/-)
