The US has strongly indicated that it will lift the sanctions imposed on India, according to media reports. In the firmest indication of the possible removal of sanctions thus far,
Christina Rocca, the Assistant Secretary of State on South Asian Affairs, was quoted as saying, "I hardly need to tell you, a review on our sanctions policy is now underway."
She added, "And we will need to work closely with Congress to see how the current situation might be changed.
Getting beyond sanctions would do much to deepen the bilateral relationship."
However, she also criticised the Indian government for its protectionist policies, particularly highlighting the disputes between the energy giant Enron and the Maharashtra government.
Ms Rocca is currently on a visit to the sub-continent.
