Over a dozen activists of India’s ruling BJP party have protested at the name of US President George Bush’s cat, media reports say. The President’s cat is called "India".
The US Presidential website (URL) ends its short biography of the Bush family with the sentence
"The Bush family also includes their two dogs, Spot and Barney, and a cat, India". It is this sentence that has caused the minor uproar.
In a demonstration at the US consulate in Mumbai, the protesters held up a poster that said, "Mr. President, don't make a mistake. Indians are lions not cats."
Mangal Prabhat Lodha, a state legislator and BJP party member was quoted as saying, "We happened to see the Web site where the cat is introduced along with other Bush family members.
That's when we realized that George Bush's cat is called ‘India’". However, Mr Lodha clarified, "No, we are not asking for renaming. We just want mention of the cat to be removed from the Web site."
Mr Lodha also gave a protest letter to an official at the American embassy, who said he would forward it to the White House.
