Traditional folk and classical music from the Indian desert state of
Rajasthan will be a highlight at the month-long festival being held in
France's Beaujolais region.
Festival Beaujolais, which was kicked off July 1 in the city of Viilefrance
and features performances in Poitiers and Morains en Montagne, will continue
till July 28.
A highlight at the festival is the Jaipur Brass Band, a team led by Hameed
Khan Kawa, who is the creator and artistic director of the band. Khan
himself is a master tabla player and comes from a family of musicians. His
forefathers were exponents of both Indian classical and folk music.
Khan came to France in 1984 and since then has been trying to popularize
Rajasthani music in the country, often mixing it with music from other parts
of the world.
He has experimented widely in mixing music of different persuasions. Joining
hands with musicians from the Bretagne region of France and the Arab world,
in 1991, he created the Erik Marchand trio that combines music from the
Bretage, Arabian peninsula and Rajasthan.
Since then, Khan has decided to present his own traditional heritage and
created another group, Musafir, which has a colorful mix of performers
belonging to various parts of Rajasthan's Thar desert. Khan used the
individuality of each style in order to highlight the diversity of the music
from the Thar.
