Bahrain has granted citizenship to almost 43,000 people from 61
nationalities in the past five decades, of whom 1,755 are Indians.
Media reports said of the total of 42,997 people who became Bahraini
nationals from 1950 until May 1, 20001 a total of 10,169 were naturalized
directly, while the number of dependent's, wives and children naturalized
stood at 25,167.
Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, under secretary for passports and
immigration at the Ministry of the Interior, was quoted as saying that the
total figure comes from three categories: naturalized citizens, spouses and
children of naturalized citizens, and foreign women married to Bahrainis by
birth.
The largest number of people naturalized were Iranian (28,702), followed by
Yemenis (3,216), Syrians (2,441), Jordanians (1,876), Indians (1,755),
Egyptians (1,355), Pakistanis (643), Saudi Arabians (518), Kuwaitis (468),
UAE (453), Sudanese (280), Iraqis (264), Philipinos (170), Qataris (152),
Palestinians (116), Britons (113) and Sri Lankans (32).
