The killer of a Hindu priest has been sentenced to life imprisonment, the BBC reports. The priest, Harish Purohit, died in October last year after being stabbed 16 times.
The murderer was named as Dean Riddell, a 26-year-old drug addict and part time male prostitute.
The court heard that Mr Purohit, from Leicester, was well-known on the town’s gay scene and that his family was aware of his homosexuality.
Further, Mr Purohit knew Riddell and had picked him up on the night of his death.
Ridell said he had stabbed Mr Purhit in self-defence after the priest tried to assault him but the court didn't believe this.
Sentencing Riddell to life (the UK has abolished the death penalty), the judge said, "It is perfectly clear to me that you were picked up by the deceased man in his motorcar.
It is quite impossible to believe you were not aware of what he was after. What happened is not clear - if there was sexual activity or not I don't know.
But there was some kind of altercation and the jury has decided it was not self-defence or provocation. It was a sustained attack from behind with a knife you carried habitually."
