India is one of the most corrupt countries in the world, according to a report in the BBC. India ranked a lowly 71 out of 91
countries on the list, sharing its position with the likes of Honduras, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
How India is going to become a world superpower, all the trumpeting about the country’s high-tech success notwithstanding, is anybody’s guess.
Bangladesh is at the bottom of the list as the most corrupt country while Finland tops the list as the world’s cleanest.
Other interesting rankings are (the Gulf countries are not metioned on the list):
(1= cleanest, 91= most corrupt):
Canada - 7
Australia - 11
UK - 13
USA – 16
Germany – 20
Japan – 21
China - 57
Pakistan – 79
Russia - 79
Indonesia - 88
The rankings list, called "The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI)", was published Transparency International (TI), a non-governmental organisation.
TI’s chairman, Peter Eigen, was quoted as saying: "There is no end in sight to the misuse of power by those in public office, and corruption levels are
perceived to be as high as ever in both the developed and developing worlds. There is a worldwide corruption crisis."
He added: "Many developed nations are in no position to preach to poorer countries on integrity in government." Several European countries feature on the list.
