The British government has acknowledged erroneously listing exports of
meat-and-bone meal (MBM) to Indonesia as going to India according to
Reuters. This error could have resulted in exaggerating India's risk of
harbouring bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as the mad cow
disease.
Scientists believe the use of MBM in cattle feed triggers the mad cow
disease. The Reuters report refers to Indian and British documents where
Britain acknowledges this mistake. It also quotes Andrew Speedy, a senior
officer in the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) as saying
"India's BSE risk is possibly lower than earlier reported,".
The letter from India's Commerce Ministry to FAO said reports of BSE risk in
India were creating a panic there. "Indian media reports are being picked up
by importing countries and the consequences are very damaging for the Indian
frozen buffalo meat exports," it said.
