Aeroflot, the Russian airline, has cancelled its direct flights to Kolkata (formerly Calcutta),
according to India Abroad.
The airline had operated one flight a week for several years, and had recently increased this
to two weekly flights.
Sources close to the airline were quoted as saying the reason for the cancellation is that
Airbus aircraft on the Kolkata route had to be diverted to the European sector. Aeroflot used
to operate IL aircraft to Europe, but these were banned because of noise regulations. And the
IL planes cannot be used on the Kolkata route, as there are no servicing facilities for them in
the city.
But an Air India official was quoted as saying, "We have taken up the issue with Aeroflot for
reviving flights to Kolkata and are optimistic about a positive result out of the
negotiations."
