Britain has chalked out a project of attracting 10,000 Indian students in the United Kingdom by 2004, according to Rob Young, the British High Commissioner posted to New Delhi, India for the last couple of years.
Young told the Indian media that the number of Indian students visiting Britain stands 7000 this year and Britain has drawn up an ambitious project of reaching 10,000 mark by the end of 2004.
For the last three years, one thousand extra Indian students were visiting Britain for studies, the High Commissioner said.
Stating that 700 scholarships were available for Indian students to go to Britain for higher studies per year, Young said although the number was "not enormous" but "we have doubled it in the last year".
The High Commission's British Council division, which has been engaged in counselling service to attract the students, has put its 'top priority' in encouraging the Indian pupils for studying in Britain, he said.
Young also said the British government was helping India through its national district primary education project in some states.
Besides, the High Commissioner said, his country was also assisting India in eradicating HIV, AIDS and polio.
