In an unusual case, two Indians have been sentenced to two years in prison for stealing and using the mobile phone of a dead man.
The incident came to light when relatives of the dead man, a UAE national, continued receiving phone bills even after he died in a hospital at Fujairah (UAE), following a road accident.
On investigation, police took into custody Mohammed Abdul Qader, an Indian, who worked as a cleaner at the hospital. He confessed to stealing the dead man's mobile phone and wallet. Qader claimed that the clothes of the deceased were dumped in the dustbin, from where he took the valuables.
Qader said he sold the mobile phone to a fellow Indian Pitilai Nagiam, who also was arrested.
Gulf News said the Fujairah lower court sentenced the duo to two months imprisonment each, but the public prosecution appealed against the verdict. Their sentences were later increased to two years in jail.
