The Metropolitan Police in London have decided to allow Hijab - the traditional headscarf as a uniform option for Muslim women according to the BBC.
The introduction of the Hijab is part of the Metropolitan forces diversity strategy called 'Protect and Respect'. The move is aimed to attract Muslim women in the police force. This is particularly important considering that Muslims make up almost one million of the seven million Londoners. A large percentage of this population is from the South Asian subcontinent.
The introduction of the Hijab follows a similar move by the Metropolitan Police for Sikh officers who are allowed to wear a turban on duty.
