Indian maid sentenced to death in Kuwait

Kuwait's top court has upheld the death sentence against an Indian maid. According to an AFP report quoting local newspapers, the maid Qadeer Kaleeja, 23, was charged with stealing money and valuables worth 2,700 dollars, and strangling her 80 year old Kuwaiti employer, Aisha al-Fadalah to death.

The murder occurred in November 1999, and the maid was sentenced to death by criminal and appeals courts. This sentence was upheld on Tuesday by the cassation court.

Indians represent the largest expatriate community in Kuwait, with a total population of 295,000 out of 2.2 million. Many of them work as domestic servants earning a monthly wage of up to 50 dinars (165 dollars).
